ICSE 2023

This proposal is to conduct a technical briefing at ICSE 2023 on the state of the art of conducting eye tracking studies in software engineering. We are requesting a hands-on briefing in a 180 minute session broken up into two modular 90 minute sessions with a short break in between. The first session will provide terminology and theories needed to understand the topic, after which the participants will work in groups in a hands-on setting to collect and analyze eye tracking data through a pipeline. The goal of this briefing is to provide the conference participants with an opportunity to meet with us one on one and discuss how they might get started with using eye tracking to support their research. This team has been working in the eye tracking field as early as 2006 and has the necessary expertise to conduct the briefing. The briefing will be targeted towards the various stakeholders - researchers, practitioners, and educators. Our eye tracking infrastructure iTrace will be demonstrated live with at least a couple of state-of-the-art eye trackers. Eye tracking is gaining a lot of traction in the community. It would be ideal to make use of the ICSE platform to communicate the current state of the art (including limitations and work arounds) in a highly interactive setting starting from the theory, data collection, and all through the processing pipeline. Sample data and scripts will also be made available.

** NOTE: Please bring a Windows laptop to the briefing if you would like to install software on your laptop to try out. The software for iTrace currently only runs on Windows. **
