8th International Workshop on Software Engineering Research and Practices for the IoTSERP4IoT 2026
IoT systems comprise software systems that enable solutions for device connectivity, device management, data management, application development, and advanced analytics for/from connected IoT systems. Software engineering is vital for IoT to design systems that are secure, interoperable, modifiable, and scalable. However, there is no consensus on crucial questions like what the best practices are for developing projects for IoT, how to select the best architecture, which communications protocols are the most suitable, and what the best practices are in terms of security.
SERP4IoT 2026 aims to provide a highly interactive forum for researchers and practitioners to address the challenges of, find solutions, and share experiences with the development, release, and testing of robust software for IoT devices and systems. The workshop will consist of keynotes presented by academic experts and practitioners from industry, long- and short-paper presentations, talks, poster sessions, working groups after each lighting session, and a fishbowl panel for semi-structured group discussions at the end of the workshop.
This year, we are providing a hybrid format, where remote and in-person sessions are mingled to reach more people in the IoT community.

Accepted Papers
Call for Papers
Prospective participants, from the academy and industry, are invited to submit papers describing their work or ideas related to the workshop topic, under the following formats:
- Long paper (8 pages)
- Short paper (4 pages)
- Extended abstract (max. 5 pages, free of APC charges) or
- Poster (1 page)
Short and long papers should identify challenges, discuss opposing viewpoints, outline processes, or present solutions related to any aspects of software engineering for IoT. Authors will have the choice to publish their papers (short/long) in pre- and post-proceedings. The paper format of the Workshop’s paper must follow the ACM formatting guidelines, and should be submitted through HotCRP. Accepted papers and talk abstracts will have between 5 and 10 minutes for presentation.
ACM Open policies: ACM papers, excluding “extended abstracts”, need to have an OA institutional agreement or undergo article processing charges (APCs) to be paid by the authors (250 dollars for members, and 350 for non-members) in order to be published. It is not possible to pay for extra pages.
The official publication date is the date the proceedings are made available in the ACM. This date may be up to two weeks prior to the first day of ICSE 2026. The official publication date affects the deadline for any patent filings related to published work.
Keynote

Eduardo Cerqueira (UFPA)
Holographic Type Communication: Are you ready for the next step in communication?
Abstract: This keynote talk will first give an introduction about Immersive communications in 6G systems, highlighting Holographic-Type Communications (HTC). A set of use cases and requirements for HTC will be presented. In addition, this keynote will present some ideas and projects from both industry and academia related to HTC. Finally an overview of research challenges and opportunities will be presented to stimulate further collaborative research in this exciting area.
Short bio: Eduardo Cerqueira received the Ph.D. degree in informatics engineering from the University of Coimbra, Portugal, in 2008. He was an Invited Auxiliary Professor at the Department of Informatics Engineering, University of Coimbra, from 2008 to 2009, and a Visitor Scholar at the Computer Science Department, University of California in Los Angeles, from 2013 to 2014. He is a Full Professor with the Faculty of Computer Engineering and Telecommunications, Federal University of Para, Brazil. His publications include eight edited books, ten book chapters, four patents, and over 280 papers in national/international refereed journals/conferences. He has served as a Guest Editor for 9 special issues for various peer-reviewed scholarly journals. His research interests include edge computing, machine learning, immersive communications, smart cities, mobility, and wireless networks.
