13:30 - 15:00 | Technical Briefing on srcML & srcDiff: Infrastructure to Support Exploring, Analyzing, and Differencing of Source CodeResearch Track at Humphreys This technology briefing is intended for those interested in constructing custom software analysis and manipulation tools to support research. The briefing is also aimed at researchers interested in leveraging syntactic differencing in their investigations. srcML (srcML.org) is an infrastructure consisting of an XML representation for C/C++/C#/Java source code along with efficient parsing technology to convert source code to-and-from the srcML format. srcDiff (srcDiff.org) is an infrastructure supporting syntactic source-code differencing and change analysis. srcDiff leverages srcML along with an efficient differencing algorithm to produce deltas that accurately model developer edits. In this tech briefing, we give an overview of srcML and srcDiff along with a tutorial of how to use them to support research efforts. The briefing is also a forum to seek feedback and input from the community on what new enhancements and features will better support software engineering research. | ||

Call for Papers
Goal and Scope
The goal of the New Ideas and Emerging Results (NIER) track is to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners to present innovative, promising ideas in the early stages of research. The NIER track provides constructive feedback by fostering discussion around challenging, cutting-edge, and innovative early-stage research. As such, these ideas do not require a strong empirical evaluation, but preliminary results that provide initial support for the feasibility of the proposed ideas are welcome. The topics of interest for this track are the same as for the main research track, that is, all the topics in software maintenance and evolution research and practice. Papers submitted to ICSME NIER 2024 must not have been published elsewhere, and must not have been under review or submitted for review elsewhere during consideration for ICSME NIER 2024.
Evaluation
Submissions will be evaluated on how well they characterize the following:
- The basis of the contribution’s originality
- The importance of the contribution
- The potential to stimulate discussion
- The potential to challenge/disrupt current practices
- Soundness
- Overall quality and consistency of presentation
- Appropriate comparison with related work
Special emphasis will be put on the originality and timeliness of the proposed contribution, that is, a full evaluation of the proposed ideas is not required. Each submission will be reviewed by at least three members of the ICSME NIER 2024 Program Committee.
Publication and Presentation
Upon notification of acceptance, all authors of accepted papers will be asked to complete an IEEE Copyright form and will receive further instructions for preparing their camera-ready versions. Accepted papers will be published in the electronic conference proceedings, which will also be available in the IEEE Digital Library.
Accepted papers will be presented in a formal setting. At least one author of the paper must register and present the paper at the conference for the paper to be published in the proceedings. More details about the presentations will follow the notifications.
How to Submit
Submissions will be reviewed following a double-anonymous reviewing process. Submitted papers must adhere to the following rules:
- Author names and affiliations must be omitted. (The track co-chairs will check for compliance before reviewing begins.)
- References to the authors’ own related work must be in the third person. (For example, not “We build on our previous work…” but rather “We build on the work of…”)
- Please see the Double-Anonymous Reviewing FAQ for more information and guidance.
- Submissions must be in English and conform to the ICSME 2024 Formatting Instructions. Please see the Research Track Call for Papers for more information.
- Papers must not exceed five pages for all text and figures, plus 1 page for references.
- All submissions must be in PDF format and submitted online through Easychair.
