Organizational Culture and its impact on the BizDev interface
Thu 12 May 2022 20:20 - 20:25 at ICSE room 7 - Software Engineering in Practice 4 Chair(s): Igor Steinmacher
Currently, organizations are looking to evolve and adapt applied software engineering methodologies targeting a broader and healthier collaboration among its functional areas. In this context, the interface between business and development (BizDev) includes all the interactions between IT and business sectors within an organization. Motivated to understand better roles, practices, and responsibilities involved in the BizDev interface, we conducted a case study on a Brazilian company, performing a set of semi-structured interviews with both development and business profiles, with further analysis using Grounded Theory procedures. The central phenomenon that emerged was the IT sector acting in business through activities such as defining and prioritizing requirements. We observed that the organizational culture strongly influenced this behavior, working as motivation and describing its attributes. Mainly, the analyzed company stimulated the sense of ownership and meritocracy, which, combined with a lack of structural and hierarchical barriers, empowered and encouraged developers to take an extra step to impact the business. The organizational culture also shaped this behavior through stimulus for technology people to act data-driven, with leadership constantly sharing business knowledge and results and demanding developers to extract and monitor data constantly. Finally, we observed cases of technology people acting in business without properly aligning with business areas, representing an influence of the organizational culture on this behavior.
