In the area of Android taint analysis, micro benchmarks are most frequently used for evaluation purposes. Although these micro benchmarks have been developed to reflect real-world scenarios, we show that analysis tools are less accurate when analyzing real-world apps instead of micro benchmark apps. To be able to do so, we developed the TaintBench framework and suite. The framework allows to construct, evaluate and inspect benchmark suites and results. The TaintBench suite consists of a set of Android malware apps that have been labeled precisely – taint flows are fully documented by denoting source, sink and intermediate steps as well as the involved features and characteristics.

With TaintBench at hand we could reveal (1.) the importance of accurate source and sink lists, and (2.) a regression observable for state-of-the-art analysis tools, namely Amandroid and FlowDroid.

The original paper has been accepted to Empirical Software Engineering (EMSE) and published on October 29th, 2021.
