Level Up Peer Review in Education: Investigating genAI-driven Gamification system and its influence on Peer Feedback Effectiveness
In educational contexts, feedback is paramount as it provides students with specific guidance on their progress and how to improve. While teachers are often the primary source of feedback, the increasing scale of classrooms has led to the adoption of peer feedback as an effective means of providing more comprehensive support. However, peer feedback quality and engagement can vary significantly among students. This paper introduces Socratique, a platform that enhances peer feedback through Gamification and Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI). By incorporating game elements, Socratique aims to motivate students to provide more feedback, while the GenAI assistant offers real-time support in crafting constructive comments. To evaluate the impact of this approach, we conducted a randomized controlled experiment with master’s students in a functional programming course. Our findings indicate that the integration of gamification and GenAI significantly increases the quantity and quality of peer feedback. This study provides evidence for the effectiveness of combining gamification and AI to improve peer review processes, with implications for fostering more engaging and productive learning environments.
