This paper evaluates GPT-Engineer, an AI-powered tool leveraging OpenAI’s GPT models to enhance software engineering documentation. We applied GPT-Engineer to refine Swagger documentation for one of our API services, showcasing the tool’s potential to streamline engineering processes, optimize resources, and address challenges related to limited connectivity and workforce shortages. This study involved using the “improve (-i)” module within GPT-Engineer across various OpenAI GPT models to evaluate and compare their effectiveness in generating precise, reliable documentation. Findings indicate that AI-driven software tools can effectively mitigate resource constraints, enabling organizations in low-resource environments to produce high-quality software. Key results highlight the impact of prompt engineering strategies, cost management, and specific adaptations necessary to maximize AI’s utility in resource-limited settings.
