Methodological and Practical Challenges in Longitudinal, Large Scale, Collaborative Questionnaire Survey Research
Voluntary turnover—the willingness of employees to leave their organization within a given period—is a costly issue in the software industry, where talent retention is crucial with rapid growth and skill shortages. This paper presents an experience report on the design and deployment of a large-scale, longitudinal survey aimed at understanding the factors influencing voluntary job turnover among software professionals. Our study aims to investigate software industry specific factors affecting voluntary turnover. We discuss key challenges encountered, including the complexities of longitudinal survey design, achieving a diverse sample, measuring industry-specific factors for which validated scales do not exist, and managing uncertainties in data collection. By discussing these challenges and our strategies in addressing them, this work aims to provide answers to methodological practices in conducting large-scale survey research in the field of software engineering.
